Radio Antena 1 gives voice to lynxes and vultures!
Alfonso Godino and Nuno Curado, from the team of Habitat Lince Abutre LIFE project welcomed the team of Antena 1 to record one more episode of the radio broadcast “Being Portuguese… Showing Portugal” to let know the objectives and progress of this nature conservation project.
Besides talking about Black Vulture’s presence in the region, Alfonso Godino focused the importance of the project’s measure that consisted on the creation of a network of feeding stations for scavenger birds. This network aims to ensure the supply of a minimum biomass (carcasses) needed to maintain a population of black vultures at both Special Protection Areas of the region (Mourão-Moura-Barrancos and Guadiana Valley), so that black vulture can gather conditions to breed locally once again, which does not happen for decades.
Tiago Perloiro, a local livestock breeder also invited to participate in the program, explained his role in the project – its contribute consists of providing some carcasses of sheep and goats that are then forwarded for one of the feeding stations for scavenger birds of the project, the Community Feeding Station of Lameirões Estate.
As for Nuno Curado, he told us about the current situation of the Iberian lynx in the region and shared some locals’ stories of sightings of this elusive feline.
During the interview, Catarina Machado talked about another nature conservation project that is taking place in the region – the LIFE project Innovation Against Poisoning – explaining the impact, risks and causes of the use of poison in the region.
